A warm welcome awaits all at Britain's only Public
House called 'The House in the
Tree'
The
name was given to the premises in the 1870's when
the then owners, the Hobbs family, had a large house
built in the lower branches of a massive beech tree
situated in front of the premises.
The
Hobbs produced a semi legendary home made cider,
and up to thirty locals could crowd into the treehouse
and enjoy their favorite brew. Playing dominoes
and cards in idyllic surroundings, plied with drink
by a serving wench, the nineteenth century drinker
knew they were in a country paradise.
The
Hobbs family ran the pub for three generations
during which time the premises were extended
and gained a full beer, wine and spirits license
but unfortunately the famous tree was felled
in 1936. Photographs of the original building
and treehouse, and others of historical interest
are on display in the pub.
Traditional
Cider & Keg Beers
This
popular meeting place was recently awarded the
highest accolade for Tetley's bitter and has a
host of other draught real ales, namely: 6X, London
Pride Marston's and Pedigree
The House in the Tree also
boasts a wide range of keg and traditional ciders
as well as renowned keg beers and lagers and has
been entered for the Annual Pub Excellence Award
Haunted?
The original building
(now the public bar) dates back to 1560 and could
tell many tales if it chose, not least that of
'Maud' a supposed witch, who was dragged from
these premises and hung at 'Maud's Elm' some two
miles away. Residents and staff have often felt
an icy chill in a small room above the bar and
although no ghostly sightings have been made,
could it be Maud's lost soul who haunts the building?
