| The Ye Olde
Ferrie Inne (reputedly haunted) has stood
beside the River Wye at Symonds Yat West for
many decades. The area takes its name from
Robert Symons, the High Sheriff of Herefordshire
and local land owner during the 17th Century. |
|
|
|
The banks of the Symonds Yat
East and Symonds Yat West are linked
by an unusual man-powered rope ferry and our ferryman
will gladly transport you across the river at
the start or the end of your forest walk.
|
|
| The Word 'Yat' means gate
or gorge. Travellers of those times would
have seen the river as an important gateway
between England and Wales. The public footpath
at the side of the river was once the old
tow path where men and horses pulled barges
carrying traffic from the Bristol Channel
inland and coal from the Forest of Dean. Iron
was also transported from smeltings, many
of which were located locally, some within
half a mile from here. The Ye Olde Ferrie
Inne thrived on this trade industry and grew
to become the delightful Riverside Inne it
is today. |
