A Few Local Sites of Interest
The Orepool is the ideal location from, which to explore the Forest of Dean, and its fascinating history. The Orepool is ideal for cycling, canoeing, caving, hiking, horse carriage, fishing holidays & has two golf courses close by...

At the heart of the village is a beautiful Grade 1 listed Victorian church built by Countess Dunraven who owned the Clearwell estate.

The village has an ancient stone cross at its centre and nearby is the elaborate fresh water spring from which the village gets its name.

Here are a few of the places you may wish to visit -

Clearwell Castle: Set in the beautiful medieval village of Clearwell the Castle dominates the village and has a fascinating past. In more recent times both Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple sought inspiration while rehearsing here! One mile from the Orepool. Clearwell Castle is a mock gothic castle built in 1725 on the site of an earlier house. It is now a venue for weddings. Deep Purple, Led Zepplin, Sweet, Rod Stewart and many other performers recorded there during the sixties and early seventies when it was a recording studio.

Clearwell Caves: One mile from the Orepool. This fascinating iron mining museum shows how mining occurred in the Royal Forest of Dean throughout history. You can explore the caves in safety and see the interesting exhibits! The Orepool pub is located right next to ancient iron mines and the name ore pool may refer to a storage area for mine produce or where a water pool was located on the iron ore outcrop. It was a miner's pub, where at the end of the day, many of them would drink before their walk home.

The Sculpture Trail: A fascinating outdoor art gallery the Forest of Dean sculpture trail is a must see if you enjoy combining nature rambles in the woods with fine artworks!

Symonds Yat: Is famous for its scenic views of the Wye Valley. Seeing is believing!

Puzzlewood: Puzzle Wood is unique. 14 acres of pre-Roman open cast iron ore mines. The paths, originally laid in the early 1800's to form a very unusual maze, have now been resurfaced with tarmac. Breathtaking scenery, wooden bridges, passageways through the moss covered rocks and many infuriating dead ends and circles - a magical grotto of trailing vines, ferns and wild flowers.
